Stuart Kelter interviews Jonathan Reisman, a doctor of internal medicine, pediatrics, and emergency medicine, who recently published his first book, The Unseen Body: A Doctor’s Journey Through the Hidden Wonders of Human Anatomy. With the excitement of an explorer, the book recounts his hard-won medical knowledge with the flair of a poet, the attention to narrative detail of a journalist, the adroitness of skills enhanced by unusual interests pursued before medical school, and the wisdom to notice and appreciate the patterns that the human body shares with the rest of the natural world. He has practiced medicine in the most extreme latitudes, both north and south, as well as extreme altitudes in Nepal. He has worked in Kolkata’s slums and with the Oglala Sioux in South Dakota, and heads a non-profit to improve healthcare and education in India. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Slate, and the Washington Post. Comments are closed.
