On today's show host MaryAnn Digman interviews Zack Quitero, the Ombudsman for the New Mexico Aging & Long Term Services Department. Zack is originally from Mesilla, got his undergraduate degree from NMSU and his law degree from UNM. Zack outlined how COVID 19 has impacted NM long term care residents and how the vaccine is being provided for that population.
Matt Bieber, Communications Director for the NM DOH gave many details on the roll out of the vaccine for COVID 19 here in NM. Matt was able to answer many questions about the website and how the algorithm works for registration. He also advised our listeners that NM will administer as many doses of the vaccine that they can get and that in the past month, approximately 35,000 doses have been received in the state. Over 100,000 people have already been vaccinated and another 500,000 are in category 1b The state hopes that everyone who wants the vaccine will be vaccinated by the summer.

Nationally-known infectious diseases epidemiologist Mark Stribich of Xenex joined Peter and Walt for this week's Coronavirus Update segment. He brought his knowledge from working on HIV and ebola to bear on our questions about the pandemic, opine on where we are, how the situation has been handled, and other issues, but also discussed the special “bacteria-zapping robots” now widely in use to disinfect hospital rooms and ER’s, all based on an invention of Mark’s and his late wife’s. (She was also a noted epidemiologist.)
