Guest Curator Dr. Emmanuel Ortega, Marilynn Toma Scholar and Assistant Professor of Art of the Spanish Americas at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Museum Director Marisa Sage explain the important place of retablos in the history of the Americas, and the response of contemporary artists to these folk-art depictions of miracles.
Retablos are small devotional paintings popular throughout Mexico, depicting saints and household scenes that are generally kept in people's homes. NMSU holds the largest collection of retablos in North America, and this week the NMSU Art Museum is opening a major new exhibit called Contemporary Ex-Votos: Devotion Beyond Medium. It is the first exhibition to pair 19th and 20th century retablos from the NMSU permanent collection with contemporary Latinx artists.
