The article was approved for publication in the April 2020 edition. But just a few weeks later when the magazine was on the way to the printer, the article was pulled with no particular explanation at the direction of someone in the New Mexico Department of Tourism which publishes the magazine.
In a cascading effect, editor Alicia Inez Guzman was forced to resign, at the same time that writers and artists from across the state lobbied fiercely to have the article reinstated, declaring this the most blatant act of government censorship.
The magazine did a quick turnaround and reinstated the article, and Ms Guzman recently won a major lawsuit against the state for pressuring her to resign. Denise Chavez joined Nan Rubîn live in the studio to recount the events of the story and the ripple effects it is having both statewide and nationally.
