A few weeks ago, when the omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus was sweeping through Africa and just beginning to make its presence known here, the dimmest members of the anti-vax crowd suggested that the global wave of death and illness was really just a ploy by the Democrats to win a few more House seats in next year’s mid-term election.
“Here comes the MEV - the midterm election variant. Democrats will do anything to cheat during an election, but we won’t let them,” proclaimed Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, who is likely best known for the Saturday Night Live parody of his absurd fawning over Donald Trump’s medical report when he was the White House physician. If this whole thing really is a ploy by the Democrats to maintain control of the House of Representatives, it’s a doozy. And I sure wish they’d call it off. In February of 2020, acclaimed local author Denise Chávez submitted a story to New Mexico Magazine called ‘”Libros para el Viaje” or “Books for the Journey”, about the history of travel on El Camino Real and across New Mexico southern border and the healing power of books.
The article was approved for publication in the April 2020 edition. But just a few weeks later when the magazine was on the way to the printer, the article was pulled with no particular explanation at the direction of someone in the New Mexico Department of Tourism which publishes the magazine. In a cascading effect, editor Alicia Inez Guzman was forced to resign, at the same time that writers and artists from across the state lobbied fiercely to have the article reinstated, declaring this the most blatant act of government censorship. The magazine did a quick turnaround and reinstated the article, and Ms Guzman recently won a major lawsuit against the state for pressuring her to resign. Denise Chavez joined Nan Rubîn live in the studio to recount the events of the story and the ripple effects it is having both statewide and nationally. This episode of Think Again features a conversation with guest Siddeeq Shabazz. Siddeeq reflects upon his thinking and personal growth process as a Black man, and as a Black Christian man, particularly since the murder of George Floyd. This candid conversation spans considerations of race, language, divisive and polarizing "ism's" and "ologies", as well as Christian faith values and principles, as he sees them being practiced and applied (or not), during our challenging times.
