Rites - Interview with Savannah Johnston
Walt and Peter talk with writer, Savannah Johnston, about her book of short stories, Rites, and her upcoming reading, which is part of the Nelson-Boswell Reading Series at NMSU. The reading is at 7:30 pm Friday, in the HSS Auditorium. Ms. Johnson is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation. She will be reading with Chad Valdez.
Rites - Interview with Savannah Johnston Two end of year follow-up stories: For the first part, host, Nan Rubin, asked Historic Preservation Specialist, Troy Ainsworth, for the latest status of the controversy around preserving the historic Trost clubhouse building on the old golf course property. In a second segment, regarding passenger service returning to the Las Cruces International Airport, Nan spoke with Airport Director, Andy Hume, about launching the new service in January.
Today, co-hosts Keith Whelpley and Randy Harris explore the everyday use of the words "I - Me - My". Do these words prompt subtle but meaningful influences in the minds of both the speaker/writer and the listener/reader?
Listeners are invited to participate in a fun little brain game; to notice how these three words - spoken or written by ourselves or others - may affect how we think, feel and communicate. The conversation also peeks briefly into considerations of I as self, how our thinking, our feelings, and our language interrelate, and on the use of absolute statements and sweeping generalizations. I, Me, Mine - The Beatles Lisa Lucca has a conversation with two Women Who Care, Kathryn Rountree and Jody Kobak Feagan about all the incredible work they are doing in the world to elevate and support others, particularly women, and how they have helped raise over a half million dollars for 100 Women Who Care. Did they ever pry that gun away from Charleton Heston, or did they just bury him with it?
Inspired by Heston, U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, made a similar vow last week, though it will be tougher to bury him with the object of his devotion. “If the maniacs in the White House come for my stove, they can pry it from my cold, dead hands,” he declared. I assume he’ll die with oven mitts on? Peter and Walt speak with Rep. Joanne Ferrary, sponsor of a constitutional amendment that would guarantee the right to clean air and water and a sustainable environment. Other sponsors of the ”green amendment” may join us if available. A 60-day session of the Legislature started Tuesday.
Walt and Peter discuss the upcoming PowerUp Las Cruces Expo and Training this Friday and Saturday at the convention center with Lisa LaRoque, sustainability officer for the city; Phil Simpson, a local energy expert and consumer watchdog; and Renee Frank, a longtime real estate professional and past president of the Green Chamber of Commerce.
Greg Smith announced his retirement from the Dona Ana Arts Council at the end of 2022 and he'll be joining Nan Rubin to talk about the evolution of the creative arts economy in Las Cruces over the past decade and what's in store for him next. For nearly 20 years throughout his various positions as a teacher, an architect and a Las Cruces City Councilman, he has been an outspoken and visible advocate for the arts.
