On this edition of Think Again, host Randy Harris was joined by Bob Hearn for some impromptu exploration of how we think. The considerations range from external, contemporary science and technology, to internal considerations of how and why we think in the ways we do - and if we're willing and able to think differently. The conversation touches on the past, the present, and what it may all mean for our future.
Rev. Carolyn Wilkins, host of Take on Faith, interviewed Daniel Sanchez, a community organizer, a father and musician from Las Cruces, New Mexico. He took us on a journey of powerful and sacred Indigenous teachings that were learned and embraced from his stepfather, His reflections will help us respect and honor Indigenous Peoples Day a bit more deeply.
Las Cruces Bulletin publisher Richard Coltharp and writer Mike Cook informed listeners about what's going on in Las Cruces, including the recent elections and upcoming RenFaire, and highlight some of the articles in the new issue of the newspaper.
County Commissioner Shannon Reynolds and Paul Martinez from LULAC joined us in the studio. Commissioner Shannon discussed, among other things, county redistricting and his proposal that the county be required to publish everything in its agenda packet in Spanish as well as English. Mr. Martinez gave his views on those issues and also some interesting plans and activities of LULAC’s, including initiatives regarding race relations and criminal justice reform, the need for a civilian police review board here, and LULAC’s participation in challenging certain recent laws in Texas.
Professor Emeritus Jon Hunner was on the phone with us to discuss his upcoming presentations in the Academy of Learning in Retirement series. His presentations concern the evolution of building styles in New Mexico as different peoples entered the area, as styles and materials changed from stone to adobe, from the Territorial Style and Santa Fe’s unique architecture to modern structures.
Walt Rubel and Peter Goodman discussed items in the news including the previous night's election results plus the Texas abortion law and carrying guns into government meetings in New Mexico.
Worried that federal spending was getting out of control, Sen. Everett Dirksen warned in 1973 that, “a billion here, and a billion there, and pretty soon you’re talking about real money.”
Dirksen’s quote seems quaint these days, in light of new spending passed or proposed by Congress to combat and counteract the impacts of the pandemic. Dona Ana Arts Council Executive Director and regular Cafe Con Leche guest host Greg Smith talked about this coming weekend's Renaissance ArtsFaire with Randy Granger, Chris Mitchell, Dan Lere and Jim Vornberg. In this final installment of a five-part exploration of "Jumpstart Your Allyship - Five Easy Steps To Ally With BIPOCs" author Dr. Xolani Kacela and host Randy Harris have a conversation about Step #5 - "Build Relationships With BIPOCs". Toward the end of the hour Randy (White Guy) and Xolani (Black Guy) demonstrate how we can have a thoughtful, reasonable, and respectful dialogue about a topic that might be either productive and bonding, or conflict laden and divisive. Much Gratitude to Dr. Kacela for sharing his perspectives on this process as it applies to the human experience.
