Republicans have won all but two elections since the state expanded to three districts in 1983.
Democrats in the state Legislature went to a lot of trouble to gerrymander the Second Congressional District, and now their colleagues in Washington, D.C. are squandering it.

Lisa Lucca shares her lively conversation with iconic writer and producer Marta Kauffman, the co-creator of blockbuster hit shows Friends and Gracie & Frankie. They discuss Marta's esteemed career, the art of collaboration, acts of activism and philanthropy, and the importance of friendship and community. Stuart Kelter interviews Jack Shlachter, a Ph.D. physicist who worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico for over three decades, also at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, as well as two organizations based in Vienna, Austria: the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization. Dr. Shlachter's training was as an experimentalist creating and diagnosing plasmas, high temperature mixtures of electrons and ions, with applicability to nuclear fusion, a potentially carbon-neutral source of nearly unlimited energy.
At Los Alamos, he served as Division Leader of the Physics Division and later of the Theoretical Division, the only individual to have held both roles in the history of the Lab. These positions involved the responsibility for budgets in excess of $100M and the management of hundreds of scientists, technicians, administrators, students, and postdoctoral assistants. Dr. Shlachter is also a rabbi, having been ordained in 1995 by Rabbi Gershon Winkler of Cuba, New Mexico. He has held Jewish leadership roles both in Los Alamos and in Santa Fe, and well as serving as a visiting rabbi in Vienna and Beijing. In addition to his current pulpit in Santa Fe, he conducts lifecycle events – such as weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and funerals – under the banner of “Judaism for your nuclear family.” Las Cruces Bulletin publisher Richard Coltharp and writer Mike Cook gave a recap of the week's news and previewed upcoming events as they highlighted articles in the latest edition of the newspaper. They also talked with the NMSU Theatre Department's Will Kilroy, director of Nunsense, which is returning to the Las Cruces Community Theatre until August 21.
Las Cruces Museum of Art has a new show opening Friday, "Icons and Symbols of the Borderland," and it's a must for anyone interested in our region and its problems and promise. Peter and Walt talk withed curator Diana Molina, en El Paso artist whose own work is among that featured in the show, and with artists Miguel Valenzuela and Alejandro Macias, who also have their artwork represented in the show.
Dona Ana County Planning and Zoning Committee chair Mel Acosta joined Walt and Peter to talk water, zoning, cannabis, and other relevant subjects.

Every year, the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico has been giving out more than a million dollars in scholarships and grants to support education, the arts, and promote improving the quality of life in Southern New Mexico. They serve 10 counties in the region and manage more than 300 endowments and 35 scholarship programs. Executive Director Terra Winter was Nan Rubin's guest in the studio to talk about the activities of the foundation and their priorities for the coming year.
