Stuart Kelter interviews Peter Debenedittis, a decades-long advocate for substance abuse prevention. He has written 11 volumes of youth prevention lessons, and has been a motivational speaker across the country to combined audiences of over a quarter million students. Peter D. has consulted for the Centers for Disease Control, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the White House Office on Drug Control Policy.
Dr. Debenedittis moved to Santa Fe in 1995 and in 1999 launched a media literacy education firm specializing in substance abuse prevention. Having previously staffed a successful gubernatorial campaign in the U.S. territory of Guam and having, himself, run for Governor of New Mexico in 2018, he has honed the political marketing skills with which to address public health issues. He is the author of the Alcohol Literacy Challenge curricula, which aims to prevent underage and binge drinking. He also become a leading proponent for legislation that would raise taxes on alcohol as a research-backed strategy for reducing alcohol consumption in New Mexico. According to recent articles by Ted Alcorn of New Mexico in Depth, New Mexico is the state with by far the highest rate of alcohol-related deaths. Las Cruces Bulletin publisher Richard Coltharp and writer Mike Cook gave a recap of the week's news and previewed upcoming events as they highlighted articles in the latest edition of the newspaper. They also talked with horticulturist Jeff Anderson, director of the county's master gardener program, about Afghan pines.
Peter and Walt talk with reporter Ted Alcorn about alcohol in New Mexico, civilian law-enforcement oversight boards, and other issues. State Rep. Joanne Ferrary will join us for much of that discussion. She’s worked on problems related to alcohol in New Mexico as a legislator and earlier. New Mexico In Depth recently published Alcorn’s in-depth series on alcohol in New Mexico, which also ran in the Sun-Times.
Co-hosts Peter Goodman & Walt Rubel talk about five years of KTAL, Walt's new show and then get into the latest national and local issues.
