Raices del Saber Xinachtli Community School
Peter and Daisy welcome Lucia Carmona, co-founder and Director of Operations and Community Engagement, and Dr. Maria Artiaga, Head Administrator, from the school. They will introduce and discuss this successful indigenous-oriented charter program.
Raices del Saber Xinachtli Community School Lisa Lucca talks with Gail Warner about reinvention, her journey as a therapist, proprietor of Pine Manor retreat, and becoming a poet in her Third Act. In this program, Jack Turney (Family Therapist) shares some of his thoughts and experiences on the subject of how our words shape our thoughts and feelings - and how our thoughts and feelings also shape our language. The conversation touches on questions about using accurate or inaccurate language, the context of our language usage and the risks of using language that reflects illusions. He speaks of "strengths based" language in therapeutic settings, and how sweeping generalizations and qualifying language influence the process. A worthwhile peek into how we think, why we think the way we do, and why that matters.
Stuart Kelter interviews Jennifer Michael Hecht, a poet and historian, teacher and public speaker, the author of several intellectually provocative books, translated into many languages. Her bestseller, Doubt: A History, explores religious and philosophical doubt throughout the world and over the centuries. Her book, entitled Stay, focuses on the history of suicide and a secular argument against it. The End of the Soul: Scientific Modernity, Atheism, and Anthropology won Phi Beta Kappa’s 2004 Ralph Waldo Emerson Award. The Happiness Myth brings a historical eye to modern wisdom about how to lead a good life. She has published in peer-reviewed journals, written articles for major newspapers and magazines, and appeared in numerous television and radio interviews. Her books of poetry – which include The Next Ancient World, Funny, and Who Said – have won accolades and major awards. Her most recent book, The Wonder Paradox: Embracing the Weirdness of Existence and the Poetry of Our Lives, published in March 2023, is the subject of today’s interview.
The delay in filling the position of inspector general suggested city officials weren’t serious about keeping promises made in 2018 following audits that revealed allegations of bid-rigging and the mishandling of public funds by organizers of the now-defunct Country Music Festival.
The person they eventually picked to fill the position proves they are serious.
