The LAB Radio Hour Celebrates 3 Years!
In the Spring of 2017, the LAB and DACC’s Creative Media Program proposed to host a youth driven radio program featuring music, a calendar of events, creative pieces and a consciousness raising segment. Lamaia Vaughn, along with her DACC students Marco Garcia and Kellin Acree, recorded the demo. Michelle Valverde, The LAB Radio Hour’s executive director, served as The LAB’s liaison to KTAL-LP Community Radio, and conceived the idea for the radio show.
The first year’s radio shows were completely pre-recorded, edited and engineered by Kellin Acree. Doña Ana Community College, East Mesa campus, contributed equipment and space. It took Kellin an estimated eight hours to polish each show.
In August 2018, the live show was broadcast from the KTAL studio, with the help of the station’s volunteer engineer Dean Mattson. Over the last three years, it is estimated that the LAB team has put in 600 hours producing the Radio Hour.
Youth and young adult LAB team members who have contributed to The Lab Radio Hour include: Kellin Acree (left), Armando Arellano (right), Joie Hernandez, Eunice Martinez Campos, Annie Quintana, Abiel Meza, (second from the right), Kobe Teal (second from the left), Laura Larson, Marco Garcia, Jesse Vick, Devon Richardson, Martin Lopez and Emanuel Guevara.
