Say Hello to the Operations Committee!
The volunteers in the Operations Committee at KTAL-LP perform the day-to-day tasks that keep the station running. They produce and edit shows at the station; configure the radio station's automation software to ensure that all programs, whether produced locally or obtained from other sources, are aired on schedule; maintain the broadcasting equipment and computers at KTAL and record and often voice our promos and other online content. The original incarnation of the group got the station on the air, and it continues to hear feedback and make improvements as needed for its hosts and listeners.
We asked the “Op Comm” members for small, personal write-ups. Here’s what they had to say.

A resident of Las Cruces since 2002, now retired from IBM sales/marketing, I joined KTAL-LP in August 2019 to work “behind the scenes” with technical issues, and to learn something new. (The key to successful aging!) I run the board for Think Again, Café Con Leche (both currently on hiatus due to Covid-19) and Earth Matters, which is recording remote interviews with Kevin Bixby. Each week I download the acquired programs we have on our schedule, take care of any routine fixit chores at the station, and serve as janitor. I served as the onsite tech/director for our High School Commencement production at Field of Dreams, and boy did I learn a lot then! That’s me in the studio booth!

A native Las Crucen, I retired from accounting in 2014 and started volunteering at KTAL in August 2017. I wanted to be involved with the music programming, so I started out loading and categorizing music in the station program software. I continue to work with music programming and have added a variety of other tasks, which keep me interested in the behind the scenes operations of community radio. I run the board for Speak Up Las Cruces, schedule program events, provide technical support and reports, record, schedule and track underwriter, sponsor and public service announcement spots and maintain the Emergency Alter System Log. I am a member of the Programming Advisory Committee and the Operations Committee. I really enjoyed helping during the November 2019 Roadrunner Revue and thoroughly enjoying producing “Community Moments” segments during the pandemic. It is a pleasure to work with other dedicated KTAL volunteers and there is always an opportunity to learn something new.

I got started in radio as a volunteer DJ for the college radio station at the University of Minnesota at Duluth in the 1980s. After a couple of decades working as a teacher and technology coordinator in El Paso, I returned to the airwaves producing a weekly show for KTAL-LP, “Lost in the Tracks”, and helping the station on its Operations Committee.

We moved to Las Cruces from St. Louis 30 years ago. Last year, I retired from NMSU, where I worked as a computer geek, after 40 years in the industry. As one of the founding members of the station, I constructed the audio configuration at the Studio. I administer our file server at the station, troubleshoot network problems and help with our web page. But, for the most part, I try to stay out of the way, as the other group members handle the day-to-day operations. I'm the Treasurer and General Manager for KTAL and was President of the Board for a couple of years. I’m an avid birder.
Along with Linda Hall, our Program Manager, these are the volunteers that keep us on the air. I really can’t thank them enough for all they do! Thanks, Dean, Minerva, and Michael!. |
