Dolores Gomez, MD is one of the CORE Faculty at our own Family Medicine Residency Program and also the Chief Medical Officer of Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Gomez came to Las Cruces in high school, went to NMSU for her undergraduate degree and to UNM for medical school. She has received extra training in Family Medicine in Phoenix.
Dr. Gomez shared her experiences with taking care of patients in Las Cruces with COVID 19. Currently most of the patients are between 20-59. The symptoms have moved from primarily respiratory to more debilitating fatigue and gastrointestinal issues. The health care resources in southern NM have met the patient needs and are prepared for an increase in patients over the next months. Host MaryAnn Digman and Nicole Martinez, the Executive Director of the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, Abode, Inc. discuss how the COVID 19 Pandemic is affecting our homeless and near homeless neighbors. The breadth of services that are available through the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope as well as the precautions that are being taken to protect our vulnerable homeless population are explained. Under Nicole’s leadership, many changes have been made in the way services are being provided to protect the clients, staff and volunteers. Nicole outlined the contingency plans to be implemented should someone in Camp Hope or otherwise homeless become positive for COVID 19. Nicole’s messages for our community are that there are services available for those who may need temporary rent/utility assistance and that it is ultimately better for all concerned for people to have a safe and protective place to live. Donations can me made on the website for Mesilla Valley Community of Hope and TentstoRents.org.
MaryAnn Digman's guest Jackie Powers Roskosky is a retired infection preventionist and one who is recovering, along with her family, from COVID 19. Her experiences with the virus, managing her symptoms as well as her husband’s and daughter’s infection course, were challenging. She described the fever, aches and extreme fatigue as being worse for her husband even though very significant for her. Jackie and her family are still having symptoms after one month even though they are no longer considered infectious. Jackie’s message was, “if you get COVID 19, don’t panic. Use a pulse oximeter and a thermometer to evaluate these vital signs. You can recover.” Jackie also reiterated that we all need to wear a mask, wash our hands frequently and/or use hand sanitizer and keep our hands away from our face.
