Right now, the Las Cruces Museum of Art is featuring an extensive exhibit on ’’José Guadalupe Posada: Legendary Printmaker of Mexico.’’ Posada was an extraordinary artist whose satirical art and political images reflected the transitioning culture of Mexico at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His exaggerated calavera skeleton figures are instantly recognizable and continue to influence pop art today. Museum Exhibit Curator Jennifer McClung and Educator Bryan Lee will join Program Host Nan Rubin in the studio to talk about the revolutionary context of Posada’s life and legacy of his work.
Today's program features Keith Whelpley reading and discussing his annual end-of-year essay.
In this very moving story Keith explores memories of his father and family both from the perspectives of a youngster, and how he sees it now. In our conversation he expands on his deeply personal and thought-provoking observations about his father, (a single father of eight) and his father's life, choices, purpose and meaning. Christmas, Church and the Lonesome Stuart Kelter interviews Kelly Drew, a professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and the Director for Transformative Research in Metabolism, whose lab focuses on hibernation biology. Inspired by the hibernation talents of the arctic ground squirrel, Kelly studies how its biology protects the brain as it goes in and out of hibernation. The work, as documented by extensive publications in professional research journals, has potential practical applications in extending the protection of the brains of patients in in medically-induced comas. And, further in the future, Kelly’s work is relevant to the necessity of hibernation — or suspended animation — in astronauts traveling to Mars.
I was 13 or 14 years old when I came to the realization that tennis is way cheaper than golf. So, I haven’t spent much time in golf clubhouses. But, I’m certainly aware that those connected to country clubs have a well-earned reputation for racism and sexism.
The Augusta National Golf Course, where the Masters is played every year, didn’t admit its first black member until 1990 and its first female member until 2012. And so, it’s not surprising that when Las Cruces had a country club, it had a similar history. Shirley and Walt speak with CW Ward, coach and president of the Las Cruces Soccer Association, about the World Cup. The final match will he held on Sunday, December 18, between Argentina and defending world champions, France.
Shirley and Walt speak with former U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman about his new book, Breakdown: Lessons For A Congress In Crisis, which discusses the obstacles he encountered while serving in the Senate from 1983 to 2013, and his proposals to improve Congress.
