Prolific poet and retired English Professor, Joseph Somoza, joins us for a conversation about how our choices of words and language shape our perceptions of reality. We get to hear Joseph read some of his works aloud and explore the internal and external influence and impact of our word choices. We touch on the effects of applying meaning to words, with or without precision and accuracy. We look at how our individual ideas and feelings about reality sometimes reflect a common understanding, and sometimes a conflict, often driven largely by our word choices. Always a delight to speak with Joseph Somoza.

Today's guest, John Cullen, explores elements of the body, mind, and spirit that affect people with Parkinson's Disease. His book Unbreakable: Surviving Adversity chronicles John's personal experience with Parkinson's. In his very moving documentary entitled It's Just Parkinson's (IJP) we get an up close and personal view of John's life and his battle with this disease. The phrase and attitude "It's Just Parkinson's" is Mr. Cullen's way of putting Parkinson's into perspective as he diligently works to maximize quality of life for himself and others. We hear from John's good friend Ivan Suarez, and from John Mylius, (Cullen's uncle) who's an advocate for our own local Parkinson's groups. Cullen's informative, inspiring and motivating conversation can serve each of us in dealing with adversity of all kinds. Gamblers who sit down at a casino blackjack table know the odds are slightly tilted against them, but expect the game to be fair. Gamblers who bet on horse races can’t have that same expectation.
While other sports have been touched by gambling scandals (the Black Sox of 1919 or an NBA referee caught betting on games in 2007), in horse racing gambling scandals are endemic. |
