Greg Smith is joined by Charlie to share information about the upcoming Spaceport America Cup. Then Ryan and Chantelle discuss their experiences with LGBTQ and the Arts.
A delightful romp through some of the science of the cosmos with Jason Jackiewicz - NMSU Professor of Astronomy and Head of the NMSU Astronomy Department. We explore some of the science and superstitions about the past, the present, and the future of the Sun in relationship to the Earth, The Milky Way Galaxy, and our universe. We brush up against the newly developing study of "Space Weather". We peek into electro-magnetism, gravity, the mechanics of how the Sun works, solar flares, and photosynthesis; the transformation of photons (sunlight) into life on Earth. We learn about the NASA Hubbel Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. We touch on astronomical study facilities in New Mexico and around the world. Whole lotta' fun !

A longtime weekly columnist for The Times of South Africa, he has also written for The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and Financial Times, among other major publications. He is the author of the #1 bestseller, We Have Now Begun Our Descent: How to Stop South Africa Losing its Way. His most recent book, entitled The Plot to Save South Africa: The Week Mandela Averted Civil War and Forged a New Nation, is the subject of today’s interview.
Let’s start with this, the city budget will never be large enough to address all of its needs. And so, it’s not surprising that public support for a proposed increase in the Gross Receipts Tax goes up when people learn how the money could be used.
A recent survey conducted by the city found that 63 percent of residents support an increase in the GRT. If the issue goes to a vote, which appears likely, I’ll be stunned if the actual support is anywhere near that high. Here, and in most of the country, there’s a crisis involving crimes, mostly misdemeanors, committed by the mentally ill. Many are also homeless. Police Cheif Jeremy Story says a small percentage of people commit huge numbers of crimes. Citizens rage that someone gets arrested then repeats the same crime a week or two later. A key failing in the system is that courts can’t constitutionally charge a person who can’t follow what’s going on and help his layer defend him, but you can’t just toss that person in jail or an asylum without showing he or she is dangerous to the public or specific people. This is described as the intersection of mental health – which seems epidemic these days – and the criminal justice system.
The New Mexico Supreme Court Commission on Mental Health and Competency has worked hard to devise a better way. That better way has been written up in great detail, and on Friday starts the pilot program of the Competency Diversion Program in two judicial districts of the state, one of which is Dona Ana County. There’s a lot to ask about this program – e.g. why we need it, what the laws are, how this is going to work, why it’s so promising – and our guests can answer them. We’re delighted to spend a whole hour, 8:30 - 9:30, discussing this important topic in some detail with New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Briana Zamora, Magistrate Judge Alex Rossario, and Public Defender Kris Knutson. In honor of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, Greg Smith is doing four “LGBTQIA+ and the Arts” Café con Leche conversations in the month of June. Topics include progress in the 55 years since Stonewall, impacts on artists’ lives and the arts, and how supportive our community is for our guests and their arts. Greg’s guests are musician and cultural storyteller Randy Granger, and new Las Cruces Community Theatre board president Dustin Wright.
![]() Lisa Lucca talks with new Las Cruces resident and debut novelist Geoff Pitcher about his move from the East Coast to New Mexico with his wife, Nancy, and the publication of his first novel, Small Pizza. We're joined today by Rob Baur, owner of Toucan Market in Las Cruces and much appreciated underwriter of KTAL-LP programming. Toucan Market is a locally owned and operated grocery store. We start with the cost of food, proceed to minimum wage, and technology as factors in the food industry. The conversation then moves across a wide spectrum of considerations including: Media and Social Media - Extremist Views in American Politics - Impacts on individuals and families - Communicating well with family - and Rob asking in reference to our challenging American discourse - "What are we trying to accomplish?" A fun conversation, and Rob leaves us with the following thoughts:
"Treat ALL People Well - Be Kind". Toucan Market |
