This conversation with Shahid Mustafa (KTAL co-host of Black English Vernacular) touches on Black History through the lens of narratives. Narratives like the traditional American history narratives that tend to ignore or erase elements of our history that are not flattering to the story of America.
We talk about how stories, narratives, and language are subject to "spin", alteration, and misrepresentation in order to fit and perpetuate our preferred historical fictions. We explore notions about the role of the original Republican party - ethics and economics - the effects of "collateral damage" - US and global impacts - and more. It’s no secret that America’s colleges and universities are big spenders. The highest-paid state official in 43 states is a college coach. In New Mexico, it’s UNM football coach Bronco Mendenhall, who has a guaranteed five-year, $6 million contract, with the opportunity to add numerous incentives on top of that base salary.
And it’s not just in athletics, as demonstrated by the lavish spending of former Western New Mexico University President Joseph Shepard that was not only tolerated by WNMU regents, but was also defended by them. On this week’s Mesilla Valley Sports Show, Mike O’Larey and Brian Cox sat down with Jack Nixon, the longtime voice of NMSU football and basketball. A Hall of Fame broadcaster, Jack shared insights from his decades of calling Aggie sports, reflecting on memorable moments and his journey in sports broadcasting.
Walt and Daisy speak with KTAL-LP music hosts Mark Mathias and The Buzzman about our Valentine’s Day celebration when they will be taking song dedications for their shows Go With the Flow and Reelin’ In the Years.
Walt and Daisy speak with Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks's Patrick Nolan and World Wildlife Fund's Beth Bardwell, about a bill in the state Legislature to make Slot Canyon a state park.
Walt and Daisy speak with Las Cruces businessman Kevin McGrath about his plans to bring bowling back to Las Cruces. We have been without a bowling alley since the closing of 10-Pin Alley in 2018.
