Activist Carlos Melendrez visited with Lynn Moorer about his book, America! Don’t You Know Me? I’m Your Native Son: Geronimo: The Controversial Campaign to Repatriate the Remains of America’s Most Famous Warrior to his Homeland. Melendrez explained how, beginning in 2003, he became involved with family members of Geronimo, described as a “champion of the dispossessed,” who died in 1909, to repatriate his remains, funerary objects, and spirit from the Ft. Sill Army base in Oklahoma to the headwaters of the Gila River in New Mexico. Other descendants opposed Geronimo’s repatriation, contributing to the failure of Melendrez’s campaign thus far.
